P.A.U.S.E. – A Marvelous Event Held in Texas for Moms of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children!
By Christine Moody, TX GBYS Program Coordinator
Twenty-five moms gathered from four geographic regions and 19 different cities in Texas to ‘P.A.U.S.E’. This newly coined acronym stands for Parents Advocating Understanding and Supporting Each other. After being on our wish list for many years, the TXH&V chapter and TXGBYS Program finally made this mom’s retreat a reality in April thanks to money provided by the Region 11 Educational Service Center. GBYS Parent Guide and TXH&V Board Member, Tiffany Savage, was at the helm of this very special event that truly embodied all that our motto represents. The environment and energy of the retreat were so special that as moms filled out their surveys at its conclusion, the most common phrases were, “We have to do this again” and “Let’s make it longer”. No one wanted to leave the supportive comradery of this special weekend.
The event was held at MD Resort in Aurora, Texas in a kind of bed and breakfast atmosphere complete with horses and other animals away from metropolitan areas. Moms roomed together, shared meals together and bonded very quickly despite their varied backgrounds, ages of children, and approaches to raising their deaf or hard of hearing children. After registration and getting settled in our rooms, we started with some fun ice breakers and took turns in the photo booth with some inspirational signs created by our participants. This was followed by a delicious dinner and an engaging presentation by Dr. Rachel St. John entitled, “Things I’ve Learned From My Patients (…And Their Families)”. In the evening, we had a cupcake reception and moms broke into facilitated discussion groups for some honest and raw sharing and support. Meanwhile, moms took turns getting 10 minute chair massages from professionals in a private room. I think this was the toughest group these massage therapists had ever encountered at one time with all of the knots in the shoulders of our stressed out moms. Some moms stayed up into the early morning hours chatting.
The next morning we shared a wonderful breakfast and an informative presentation from our own Lisa Crawford, “What Works for Your Child Is What Makes the Choice Right! But How Do Parents Know What’s Working?” Moms left wanting more, but I think the length and content of this event was just right to give these amazing moms a much needed P.A.U.S.E. from their very important everyday roles.
